PEKIN - Hubert S. "Conk" Conkright, 95, of Pekin passed away at 10:50 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Pekin Manor in Pekin. He was formerly of rural Peoria.
Born Feb. 1, 1918, in St. Louis, Mo., to Earl G. and Effie (Boyd) Conkright, he married Gladys McBeth Baxter on Jan. 19, 1950, in Knoxville. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Patricia J. (Lonnie) Ford of Glasford; one son, Larry E. (Kitty) Baxter of Chillicothe; three grandchildren, Kimberly (Kevin) George of Bartonville, Frank (Lore) Baxter of Chillicothe and Lisa (Troy) Benson of Chillicothe; seven great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was a World War II Navy veteran and fought in the Pacific Theater.
Conk retired from Caterpillar after working 37 years in August of 1977.
He was a 40-year member of the Pekin Moose Family Center No. 916 and a 48-year member of Glasford American Legion Post No. 35. He was a retired member of United Auto Workers Local No. 974. He was a charter member of the Company No. 3 Timber Hollis Fire Protection District out of Glasford. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pekin for over 55 years.
He enjoyed sports, traveling and being among friends.
Conk graduated from Knoxville High School, where he was very active in all sports. He refereed basketball games for years.
He traveled all 50 states plus Canada and Mexico with his wife. They enjoyed wintering in Florida for 39 years.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. The Rev. Judy Doyle will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior at the funeral home. Interment will be in Knoxville City Cemetery in Knoxville, Ill., with military rites accorded by the Military Funeral Honors Team and the Galesburg American Legion.
