CHILLICOTHE - Milford L. Appel, 90, of Chillicothe passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at UnityPoint Health-Methodist in Peoria.

Milford was born on Dec. 31, 1922, in Sparland, Ill., to Henry J. and Marie (Beck) Appel. He married Fern Bauer on July 3, 1942.

She survives, along with a daughter, Cinda (Bob) Habgood of Bedford, Texas, and a brother, Ralph Appel of Lacon. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Christopher (Fanny) Habgood, Shannon (Matthew) Morton, and Ian Holland; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Abigail and Samuel Morton; and many special relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, James; and two brothers, Eugene and Harold.

Milford was a World War Army veteran who saw action on D-Day at Omaha Beach. After leaving the military, he was employed as an independent truck driver for the Hytex Brickyard outside of Sparland and later at Caterpillar Tractor Co.

He was a keen hunter and enjoyed traveling with Fern on the open road and stopping at campgrounds along the way between Illinois and Texas.

He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Chillicothe, where he was involved in the Methodist Men's Club. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 9, Peoria Casting Club and Pearce Community Center in Chillicothe.

Services will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in Chillicothe. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. with a funeral service following. Rev. Ted Mitchell will officiate. Burial will be in the Chillicothe City Cemetery with military rites conducted.
