PEORIA - Richard L. Waldschmidt, 77, of Peoria passed away Saturday, August 4, 2018, at his residence.
Born in Peoria, IL, on August 4, 1941, he was the son of Lawrence and Mildred (Dennison) Waldschmidt. He married Marlys Blemler on July 31, 1965.
He was preceded in death by his two parents; brother, Robert Waldschmidt; and granddaughter, Madison Damron.
Survivors include two daughters, Nicole McCann of Lexington, KY, and Melissa (Jeff) Challacombe of Brimfield, IL; five grandchildren, Logan Damron, Hunter Damron, Adam Challacombe, Nicholas McCann and Abigail McCann; brother, Rex Waldschmidt of Peoria; former wife, Marlys (Blemler) Shepler of Peoria; one niece; and two nephews.
Richard graduated from Spalding Institute in 1960, where he played football for four years, and worked at Caterpillar for 38 years, retiring as Quality Control Manager on December 1, 2002. He served in the Air Force for four years, as well as served in the Korea for one year. He enjoyed coaching and directed the Peoria Soccer Club for over a period of eight years. Richard also enjoyed working as a volunteer Physical Education teacher at Holy Family Catholic School, where he was a devout parishioner. Richard also helped start the Parish Fish Fry with help from the Booster Club. He was passionate about his yard and was an avid Cubs fan.
Funeral service will be Thursday, August 9, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Resurrection Mausoleum, with a visitation prior to the service starting at 9:30 a.m. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Franciscan Friars will officiate.
Memorials may be made in Richard's name to an education fund for his grandchildren, in care of PNC Bank.
