CHILLICOTHE - Dr. Robert T. "Ted" Bliss, 88, of Chillicothe passed away at 5:52 a.m. on Monday, April 29, 2013, at Heritage Health in Chillicothe, Ill.
Ted was born on Sept. 6, 1924, in Peoria, Ill., the son of Robin A. and LaVeda M. Shane Bliss. He married Helen Winkler in Smithville, Texas, who passed away in August of 1968, in Chillicothe. In 1969, he married Mary Lee Bornsheuer in Chillicothe.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Lee; his daughter, Linda Whitford of Dallas City, Ill., and son Robin Bliss of Dallas City, Ill.,
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Steven Bliss of St. Petersburg, Fla., in 2002. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Ted served as a B-29 bomber pilot during World War II and flew 33 combat missions. Dr. Bliss graduated from the Monroe College of Optometry in Chicago in 1947, and began his optometric practice in Chillicothe until his retirement to Florida at age 62.
Ted was active in theater in Chillicothe Theater and the Peoria Players, as well as the Sun City Center Men's Chorus in Florida. He was passionate about golfing, boating and traveling. Ted was a longtime member of Arrowhead Country Club.
Cremation rites will be accorded and visitation will be held on Thursday, May 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home in Chillicothe. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2013, at the Funeral Home. Rev. Ted Mitchell will officiate.
