PEORIA - Thomas J. Ptasnik, 90, of Peoria died at 6:22 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, in Washington, Ill., at Washington Christian Village, with his family by his side.
He was born on Sept. 10, 1923, in Kewanee, Ill., to Katherine (Euchar) and Luke Ptasnik. Thomas married Betty Jane Bates on June 7, 1947, in Kewanee. She preceded him in death on Oct. 4, 1995.
Tom also was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Mary; and his brother, Henry.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Beth Ptasnik of Peoria; his son, David (Cindy) Ptasnik of Seattle, Wash.; his grandchildren, Katherine and Joseph, also of Seattle; a niece, Katherine (Barry) Zauss of Palm Springs, Calif.; and nephew, Henry (Ginny) Bates of Las Vegas, Nev.
Tom proudly served his country during World War II from 1942 to 1945 in the U.S. Army Air Corps. While serving, he narrowly escaped death from a buzz bomb attack in England.
He graduated from Purdue University in 1950 with a degree in electrical engineering. He spent his entire career at CILCO, retiring in 1988 as supervisor of electrical engineering department and system planning department.
Tom enjoyed gardening, traveling, caring for his dogs and was a Chicago Bears and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was active in the CILCO golf and bowling leagues.
Tom was a member of the Masons of Peoria for more than 50 years.
He was of Episcopalian faith.
Cremation rites will be accorded and inurnment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Kewanee. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date.
The family wishes to thank the great staff of Washington Christian Village for their compassionate care that they gave to Tom for the last 4 1/2 years at the nursing home.
