Wanda Kreig
GALESBURG - Mrs. Wanda M. Kreig, 97, of Galesburg, Illinois, passed away at 10:53 p.m. Sunday, September 10, 2017, at Seminary Manor Nursing Home.
She was born on January 31, 1920, in Galesburg, the daughter of David W. and Orleatha Bridge Sward. She married Raymond Kreig on December 12, 1953, in Galesburg.
Wanda is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Raymond; her daughter, Janet D. Kreig of Galesburg; her son, Roger R. (Judy) Kreig of Morris, Illinois; and two grandchildren, Alex (Samantha) Kreig of St. Louis, Missouri and Kate Kreig of Galesburg.
She was preceded in death by four brothers.
Wanda graduated from Monmouth High School and put herself through college, initially attending Western Illinois University, where she received her teaching certificate. After teaching at Sunnyside, a one-room school east of Knoxville for 3 years, she completed her Bachelors' Degree in Home Economics at the University of Illinois in January of 1947.
Wanda's career continued her path of teaching others, as an Illinois Extension advisor for 8 years in Madison, Mason and Knox Counties. When her youngest started school, she too, returned to teaching fifth grade at Abingdon Grade School for 18 years, retiring in 1983.
Community service was always important to Wanda. She served First Presbyterian Church as Elder, Trustee and Deacon. She was one of three women who brought Habitat for Humanity to Knox County. She was a 4-H Club leader and judge for many years, and, long before the days of internet research, she led the Knox County Genealogy Society in documenting the census history and birth records of the area, helping future researchers find their roots. Wanda was instrumental in organizing the Knox County Home Economists in Home Making, and she helped organize the University of Illinois Home Economist Alumni Association in 1975.
Wanda loved making jams and jellies, this was a passion developed in her early life to share with friends and family. Her jams and jellies become a very popular item at many community fundraisers.
Celebration of life services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, September 14, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Shawn Smith will officiate. Family will greet friends following services. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church. A private family burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens.
