PEORIA - Marjorie McMillan Smith, 91, longtime former resident of Peoria, died on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, in Santa Rosa, Calif.
A graveside committal service will be held at the outdoor columbarium of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Peoria at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15. Margie's oldest son will officiate.
She was preceded in death by her husband, former Caterpillar executive, Lorin William Smith III; a son, Dean; and three grandchildren.
Surviving are her sons Doug, Dave, Don and Dan; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Margie's primary vocation was that of a mother, lovingly raising her five boys. Her secondary vocation was that of a grandmother, expressing unquestionable love for all of her grandchildren. In addition to these vocations, she was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church, actively participating in worship services, study groups and social service projects. She was well known for her determination and ability to see good in every person, dedicated to encouraging others to do the same.
In addition to the above, Margie was a writer. Her early employment was as a journalist. She was a published poet. She kept countless journals recording her many activities and the activities of her extended family. She was a playwright. Just a few weeks before her death, she attended, in a wheelchair and with an oxygen tank, a production of her play, "Fire Is My Nature," a play about St. Catherine of Siena. An unquenchable "fire" of compassion and love was Margie's nature.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Cathedral.
Arrangements are through Cumerford-Hurd Funeral Home, 428 W. McClure Ave., and Margie's online memorial site may be viewed at www.hurdfamilyfunerals.com.
