CHILLICOTHE - Martha L. Gill, 95, of Chillicothe, Ill., passed away at 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Heritage Manor in Chillicothe.

Born Aug. 29, 1918, in Peoria, Ill., to William Henry and Verna (Mullin) Kurz, she married S. Homer Gill on Sept. 5, 1937. He passed away April 17, 2003.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William Henry Kurz; infant daughter, Dana Lee; and one grandson, David Colwell.

Surviving are one daughter, Dianne Colwell of Chillicothe; and one son, Donald H. (Connie) Gill of St. Charles, Ill. Surviving grandchildren are Richard (Debra) Colwell of Arbor Vita, Wis., Lorna (Mike) Berchtold and Gill (Aundrea) Colwell of Chillicothe, Jeremy (Charlotte) Colwell of Peoria Heights, Gregg (Jennifer) Gill of St. Charles, Ill., Gwen (Peter) Young of Castle Rock, Colo., and Jarrod Gill of Telluride, Colo. Twelve great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandsons and one great-great-granddaughter also survive.

She loved living in a small town and was devoted to her family. She assisted her husband in several business ventures, the Chillicothe Dairy and Gill's Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning.

Over the years she participated in many activities in the First United Methodist Church, including singing in the church choir for 35 years. She was a former member of Sweet Adeline's and she enjoyed square dancing, dancing at the Hub Ballroom, playing bridge, cooking, reading, sewing, traveling and especially liked "shelling on the southern beaches." She was known for her love of animals, especially cats.

Funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at the Chillicothe First United Methodist Church, 1023 N. Sixth St., with visitation held one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Raymond Harrison will officiate. Burial will be in the Chillicothe City Cemetery.

Weber-Hurd Funeral Home of Chillicothe is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, Rescue 33 and the Chillicothe Historical Society.
