WASHINGTON - Maurice D. "Morrie" Schap, 83, of Washington, Ill., died at 5:40 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 29, 1931, in Stockton, Ill., to Melvin and Helen Payne Schap. He married Atsuko Matsumura on May 5, 1955, in Kobe, Japan. She preceded him in death on May 20, 2004, in Peoria.
He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are two sons, Charles M. (Carole) Schap of San Marcos, Calif., and Thomas E. Schap of Largo, Fla.; one sister, Carol Jane Winkler of Las Cruces, N.M.; one brother, Phil (Saundra) Schap of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two grandchildren, Emily Schap and Alexandra Schap.
Morrie was a master sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict.
He retired from Caterpillar Tractor Co. in 1986, after 40 years in research at the Mossville Tech Center.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 2 in Downtown Peoria.
Morrie was an avid gardener and loved politics. He made his own wine, enjoyed photography and also enjoyed car mechanics.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2014, at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington. Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation.
