VARNA - Charles E. Camper, age 90, formerly of Varna, died Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Alden of Long Grove.
He was born Oct. 21, 1923, in Elgin to Charles Henry and Verdalia (Barnes) Camper. He met his future wife, Jenneth Hamilton, at Caterpillar, and they married on May 2, 1953. Formerly of Crystal Lake and Cary, he was a resident of Varna for 20 years before moving to the McHenry area recently to be near his family.
For the majority of his career, he was employed in sales in the petroleum industry, working first for Conoco Oil Corporation and later for Gulf Oil in Park Ridge from 1959 to 1979.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was a corpsman attached to the Marine Corps. He served during World War II, participating in the battle of Iwo Jima, and later served in the Korean War.
While living in Varna, he was a member of VFW Post 555 in nearby Henry. He was also active with the Boy Scouts, and served as a Cub Master.
Survivors include seven children, Charles D. Camper, Robert T. (Karen) Camper, Timothy E. (Joan) Camper, Gerald W. Camper, James T. Camper, Matthew P. Camper and Peggy (Tom) Preidis; nine grandchildren; a brother, Thomas (Sharon) Camper; and a sister, Annabelle (William) Giles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jenneth on Nov. 15, 2013; and two brothers, Walter and James.
Inurnment, with military honors, at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood is planned for a later date.
