PEORIA - Carlyle "Si" E. Simons, 89, of Peoria, Ill., passed away at 1:30 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria.
He was born Sept. 15, 1924, in Galva, Iowa, to Edward and Esther G. (Buss) Simons. Si married Donna J. Cassel in 1951 in Wisconsin. She preceded him in death.
Surviving are five children, Stephen Simons of Duluth, Minn., Cheryl Dixon of West Peoria, Karen (Stephen) Bozdech of Mahomet, Christy (Charles) Wood of West Peoria and Nancy Ragain of Peoria; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather and one sister.
Si was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria. He also was a member of the American Legion Post 2 in Peoria and the Fleet Reserve Association. He volunteered for the American Red Cross.
He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1989. Si retired from the U.S. Navy in 1965, with 20 years' service. He served in the South Pacific, during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroism while serving with the 1st Engineer Battalion, 5th Marines, during the Chosin Reservoir Campaign in North Korea. He was a member of the "Chosin Few."
Si was "a stranger to none and a friend to all."
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Endsley-Sedgwick Funeral Home in Bartonville, with visitation from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Cremation rites will be accorded after the services. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross.
