WASHINGTON - Donald T. Dietz, 67, of Washington died at 1:27 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, after a long illness.
He was born Sept. 9, 1946, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Donald Thomas and Ruth Hayes Zophi. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Stanley Dietz. Don married Peggy Agee on Sept. 3, 1978, in Washington. She survives.
He is also survived by his four children, Donnie Dietz of Kewanee, Ill., Cyndie Dietz of Wyoming, Ill., Laura (Jeffrey) Fosselman of Lake Villa, Ill., and Stephanie (Zachary) Hardy of Springfield, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Josie, Zach, Dylan, Chase, Johnathan, Matthew, Noah and Emily; one brother, John (Carole) Dietz of St. Paul, Minn.; and one sister, Bonnie Burke of Las Vegas, Nev.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Sari Dietz.
Don served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
He worked for almost 30 years for Caterpillar in Mossville as an assembler, before retiring in 2009.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 100 in Washington.
He loved to learn and inspired learning in others. He was always asking "What did you learn today?" or "Do you know what day it is today?" He will be remembered most of all for his love of fishing, his devotion to the Chicago Cubs and for being a caring husband, amazing father, and loving Pop Pop.
There will be a funeral service for Don on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at 6 p.m. at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The Reverend Jerry Agee will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service and inurnment will take place at Fondulac Cemetery in East Peoria on Monday, March 31, 2014.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in memory of Donald T. Dietz.
