Henry Behrends Obituary

PEORIA - Henry "Bud" Edward Behrends, 92, of Peoria passed away at 7:21 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Heartland of Riverview in East Peoria.

He was born May 27, 1921, on a farm in Limestone Township to William and Clausina Janssen Behrends.

Henry was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army Air Corps.

Henry was married on Feb. 14, 1950, to Mary Louise Lane in Peoria. She preceded him in death on June 21, 2009, in Peoria. They spent nearly 60 years together.

They worked together in raising their family and running their businesses. They enjoyed traveling, helping friends and family, and bringing joy to those who had the pleasure of knowing them.

Henry was a happy and friendly guy, novice singer, jack-of-all-trades and all-around good character. Henry was co-owner of Mac-Hy grocery stores from 1947 to 1974; he then became a meat cutter for Thompson's Grocery in Peoria. He retired in 1986. He kept busy doing various odd jobs for people, putting together puzzles and spending time with family. His last part-time job was at Cook Rental in Morton, where he worked until age 88.

Henry is survived by his two sons, Willard (and Donna) Behrends of East Peoria and Dennis (and Tina) Behrends of Washington; and his daughter, Rebecca (and Rick) Wisner of East Peoria; six grandchildren, Rachel (and Jon) Omerod of Marquette Heights, Stephanie Behrends of Washington, Haley (and Kyle) Hein of East Peoria, Casey (and Jake) Meisner of Sterling, Colo., Myles Wisner of East Peoria and Diana Behrends of Tempe, Ariz.; two great-granddaughters, Leah and Lily Omerod; four sisters, Henrietta Goetz, Mable Heneberry and Margaret Parrish, all of Peoria, and Joann Lakis of Galesburg; and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Reaka Tutweiler, Lena Dentino, Amelia Monroe and Gesina Sage, and his stepfather, John Cronin.

A memorial visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2014, at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. A memorial service for Henry will be at 7 p.m., following visitation. Pastor John Plunkett will officiate. Cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Glendale Cemetery in Washington.
