PEORIA - Roger V. Thornton, 78, of Peoria passed away at 1:43 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014, at Heartland Manor Care.

Roger was born Jan. 22, 1936, in Quincy, Ill., to Charles E. and Nettie (Higgins) Thornton.

He is survived by two sons, Patrick Thornton of Houston and Vincent (Heidi) Thornton of Dayton, Ohio; one grandson, Michael; and three sisters, Mary Stranckmeyer of Montgomery, Ill., and Patricia (Jim) Bernhardt and Sue (Gerry) Mast, both of Springfield, Ill.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen and Betty.

Roger was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Korean War.

He owned Scoot-N-Scamper Shoe Store and was later the district manager for AFLAC Insurance.

Roger was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, Spalding Council 427, Third Degree.

A memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mount Sterling. Father Steve Thompson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial of ashes will be in Mount Sterling Catholic Cemetery.
