Ella Wittmer Obituary

MORTON - Ella Rose Wittmer, 93, of Morton died at 4 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2014, at her home.

She was born March 27, 1921, in Loda, Ill., to Ernest and Mary (Yergler) Bauer. She married Maurice Wittmer on May 2, 1942, in Bloomington.

Surviving are her husband of Morton; her children, Mary (Rich) Streitmatter of Morton, Ruth (Terry) Stevig of Wauconda, Ill, Roy (Sue) Wittmer of Goodfield, David (Laurie) Wittmer of Morton, Jane (John) Fehr of Roanoke and Susan (Jim) Henning of Gurnee, Ill; eight grandchildren, John and Dan Streitmatter, Becky Hanrahan, Sarah Roudis, Laura, Rachel and Andrew Fehr and Julia Wilson; two stepgrandchildren, Abby and Kate Henning; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Sonnie) Bauer and Lawrence Bauer, both of Cissna Park, Ill; five sisters, Wilma Blunier of Eureka, Lois Schmidt of Milford, Ill., Marie Hohulin of Roanoke and Dorothy Walder and Carol (John) Waldbeser, both of Cissna Park, Ill.; and two sisters-in-law, Grace Bauer and Linda Bauer.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, David Stevig; two brothers; and one sister.

Ella was a loving, devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a very caring person who was loved by all who knew her.

In addition to being a homemaker, she worked for many years alongside her husband in business.

She was an active member of the community, serving as a Cub Scout leader, a Girl Scout leader, a 4-H leader and an election judge.

Ella was a skilled seamstress and cook, a voracious reader and an expert puzzle solver. She had a great appreciation for common sense and straightforwardness. Among her favorite things were flowers, music and spending time on her screened-in front porch.

Ella was a member of the Morton Apostolic Christian Church, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014, with church ministers officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton. Further visitation will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Morton Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Apostolic Christian Restmor Inc. or UnityPoint Health-Methodist Hospice Program.
