EAST PEORIA - Richard D. Winkler, 82, of East Peoria died at 2:25 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014, at Hopedale Nursing Home in Hopedale, surrounded by his family.
He was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Peoria, Ill., to Walter and Mildred Wiesehan Winkler. He was raised on the family farm in East Peoria. On Feb. 17, 1952, he married Jean R. Stone in Peoria. She survives.
He is also survived by three daughters, Deborah (Rick) Garrison of Tremont, DeDe (J.R.) Friedrich of Germantown Hills, Ill., and Danine (Terry) Grebner of Glasford; one son, Richard W. Winkler of Peoria; six grandchildren, Gretchen (Nick) Uhlman, Matthew (Amanda) Winkler, Mallory (Danny) Osterloo, Hannah Grebner, Jack Friedrich and A.J. Friedrich; and two great-grandchildren, Brady and Kinze Uhlman.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Harold Winkler; and his parents.
Richard was a toolmaker at Caterpillar in East Peoria for 40 years, retiring on May 1, 1990.
After he retired, he enjoyed yard work and gardening. He was a very handy man and could fix anything.
He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Peoria, where he was an active usher and served on the property board, as well as many other boards. He also volunteered in the church office.
There will be a funeral service for Richard at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Peoria. Pastor Mark Nelson will officiate. Visitation will be Monday, April 28, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in East Peoria and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria.
