Joyce Goldhammer Obituary

PEORIA - Joyce Marie Goldhammer, 76, of Peoria, died at 11:45 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Lutheran Hillside Village, where she had resided since November 2012.

Born Dec. 18, 1937, in Peoria to Chet and Doris Buchen, she married Richard L. Goldhammer on June 28, 1959, in Peoria.

Richard passed from this life on June 25, 2004.

Surviving are one son, Rick (and Sue) of Peoria; one daughter, Jill Goldhammer of Peoria; one brother, Gerald Buchen of East Moline, Ill.; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Claire.

Joyce was a graduate of Reservoir Grade School, class of 1951, and Woodruff High School, class of 1955. She earned a bachelor's of music education in 1959 and master's of arts in elementary education in 1977 from Bradley University.

Joyce taught second grade and elementary music in Peoria School District 150 from 1975 until her retirement in 2002, working at Von Steuben School and Hines Primary School.

Joyce earned many honors and touched many lives through her teaching. She earned a Governor's Master Teacher Award in 1984 and was listed as Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

In addition to teaching, Joyce excelled as a musician and served as organist at First English Lutheran Church in Peoria for 45 years. She also served as organist at Advent Lutheran Church in Morton, Ill., and Arcadia Presbyterian Church in Peoria. She taught piano lessons for many years, accompanied many band and voice students over the years and played many weddings, funerals, musicals, and other events in the Peoria area.

Joyce was a member of the American Guild of Organists and Salem Lutheran Church in Peoria, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2014. The Revs. Elise Rothfusz and Paul Park will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 2014, at The Wilton Mortuary in Peoria. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.
