Penelope Vlahos Obituary

KEWANEE - Penelope "Penny" S. Vlahos, 84, formerly of Kewanee, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at her home in LaGrange Park, Ill.

Penny was born in East Moline, Ill., on Dec. 2, 1929, the daughter of George and Panagiotitsa (Frangou) Stavros. On Nov. 27, 1955, she married Theodore Vlahos in Moline, Ill., and moved to Kewanee, Ill.

She and her husband, Ted, had three daughters, Emily (Mark) Rehn of Western Springs, Ill., Pamela (Kenneth) Mott of Kewanee, Ill., and Mary (Chris) Velisaris of LaGrange, Ill. She has six grandchildren, Dianna and Katherin Rehn, Theodore and John Mott and Christopher and Madalyn Velisaris.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her, sisters Angeline Stavros, Georgia (Lou) Sarantopoulos and Demetra Stavros.

Penny graduated from United Township High School in East Moline and attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. She was employed at John Deere in human resources. She was also owner-operator of the former Gazebo Clothing and Emporium Clothing and Bridal Store in Kewanee. One of her greatest joys was helping brides prepare for their wedding. In 1985, she sold her business.

Penny was very involved in her community and participated in many activities. She was a Girl Scout leader and a longtime member of Fortnightly, League of Women Voters, All Saints Greek Orthodox church of Peoria, the Philoptochos Society at her church and the Kewanee Garden Club. In 1984, she was named Business Woman of the Year in Kewanee, Ill.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. today, May 21, 2014, at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home in Kewanee, Ill. Father Cyprin Sas will officiate. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at the funeral home, where a Trisagion Service was held at 7 p.m. Additional visitation will be one half hour prior to the services today at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Kewanee.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 1812 N. Prospect Road, Peoria, IL 61603; or Black Hawk College East Campus, 26230 Blackhawk Road, Galva, IL 61434.
