PEORIA - Russell E. Sherer, 82, of Peoria passed away at 3:55 p.m. Monday, May 26, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Proctor.

Russell was born on June 18, 1931, in Coffeen, Ill., to Guy and Josephine (Tilling) Sherer. He married Madeline M. Bartholomew on Nov. 24, 1956, in Peoria. She survives.

He is also survived by two daughters, Julie (Alex) Medziak of Naperville and Mary (James) Tillhof of Mapleton; two sons, Greg Sherer of Dallas and James (Nancy) Sherer of Carrollton, Texas; and five grandchildren, Hayley Sherer, Hayden Tillhof, Sean Sherer, Abby Tillhof and Allyson Tillhof.

He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Sherer; one grandson, Spencer Tillhof; two sisters; and two brothers.

Russell was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. He worked as a tool designer for Caterpillar for 37 years, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 20 and the Izaak Walton Club.

Russell enjoyed dancing with friends at the Elks Club, gardening, traveling and vacations. He was a very loving father and grandfather. He loved Westerns and sending email jokes to family and friends.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2014, at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Father David Richardson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, May 29, 2014, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, with recitation of the rosary at 4:45 p.m., preceding the visitation. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in West Peoria.
