Eugene Taylor Obituary

PEKIN - Eugene W. Taylor, 86, of Pekin passed away at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014.

Born Jan. 17, 1928, in Pekin to Harry V. and Marie E. (Penning) Taylor, he married Doris M. Wilcox on June 26, 1949, in Pekin. She died March 29, 2002, in Pekin.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Surviving are three daughters, Pamela (Gene) Waller of Pekin, Barbara (Terry) Johnston of Charlotte, N.C., and Marcia (Mark) Zelnio of Bloomington; four grandchildren, Bryan (Erin) Crum, Kristin Zelnio, Megan (Alison) Crum and Bradley Zelnio; and one great-granddaughter, Avery Crum.

A graduate of Pekin Community High School, he continued his education at the University of Illinois.

He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War and also had served in the Illinois National Guard.

Gene began his employment with Pekin Insurance in 1953. Throughout the years, he held a variety of positions, including assistant underwriter, underwriting manager, personnel manager, vice president of administrative services, secretary and executive vice president. Gene was named president and chief executive officer of all Pekin Insurance Companies in 1988. He had served as a member of the Pekin Insurance Board of Directors. Gene retired in February of 1992 after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Pekin Insurance Twenty-five Year Club.

Community involvement was very important to Gene. He had served as a member and past president of the Board of Education for Pekin Public School District 108 for nine years, past president of the Pekin United Fund and was a member of the board of directors of Herget Bank in Pekin, Pekin Salvation Army and the Illinois Association of School Boards. He had been a member of First United Methodist Church in Pekin, Pekin Country Club, Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce, American Society of Corporate Secretaries, the Illinois Insurance Information Service, the Office Occupations Advisory Committee at Illinois Central College and the Pekin District Junior Achievement.

Private family services will be held at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. The Rev. Judy Doyle will officiate.
