CANTON - Stephen W. Wagner Sr., 96, of Canton died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Graham Hospital in Canton.
He was born on June 1, 1918, in Freeman, W.Va., to Stephen W. and Teresa (Dopona) Wagner. He married Mary E. Masterson on July 27, 1946, in Chicago. She survives.
Other survivors include three children, Terry (Bob) Grubb of Conifer, Colo., Stephen W. (Linda) Wagner Jr. of Springfield, Ill., and E.J. "Emma" Wagner of Burnsville, Minn.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, William and Edward; one infant sister, Emma Wagner; and his sister, Teresa Wagner, in her youth.
Steve was an agent for Metropolitan Life in Canton for 29 years. After retirement, he volunteered at Graham Hospital for 25 years.
He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Forces veteran, serving as a crew chief for the 8th Air Force as a master sergeant.
He was very active in 40 et 8 Voiture 812 in Canton, holding all offices, until reaching Grande Chef in 1992. He was the state chairman of the 40 et 8 nursing program and the chair of the local nursing scholarship fund. He also was a very active member of the American Legion Post 16 in Canton, serving as commander for two terms, and was involved in the Boys State program.
He was of the Catholic faith.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 4 at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, where visitation will be held two hours prior. Burial, with military honors, will be at White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the 40 et 8 Voiture 812 Nursing Scholarship Fund.
