Jolene Straw Obituary

PEORIA - Jolene Larue (Haugh) Straw, 62, of Peoria passed away unexpectedly at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Methodist in Peoria, from complications following surgery the previous afternoon.

She was born May 10, 1952, in Morrison, Ill., and was adopted by Robert M. and Lorraine J. (Dingman) Haugh, who have both preceded her in death.

Jolene is survived by her daughter, Stefanie Straw; her grandchildren, Sydney and Jackson Swearingen; her sister, Jane (Mark) Thornhill; her nieces, Haidee, Nicole and Megan Mathews; and a host of loving friends.

She graduated from Milledgeville High School in the class of 1970.

She most recently worked for the Tazewell County Resource Center as a supervisor, last working on Friday.

Jolene attended St. Thomas Catholic Church and was involved in Youth for Christ as a young adult.

She loved to read medical books and watch medical TV shows. She adored cats and was proud of being known as the Cat Lady. Jolene enjoyed flower gardening and solving jigsaw puzzles. Her favorite color was blue, and her favorite TV series was "Monk."

Her most admirable trait was her willingness to donate her time and energy. She was a longtime donor to American Red Cross and Foster Pet Outreach. In addition, she was a wonderful and giving single mom.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, June 6, 2014, at The Wilton Mortuary in Peoria. The Rev. John King, from Riverside Community Church, will lead a prayer service at 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Peoria Heights. The Rev. Father Thomas Taylor will officiate. Burial will take place at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria.
