Constance Birkey Obituary

CANTON - Constance L. "Connie" Birkey, 87, of Canton, formerly of Springfield, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Graham Hospital in Canton.

She was born in Beardstown, Ill., on March 17, 1927, the daughter of Lorenz and Johanna Eberhardt Schaefer.

She graduated in 1945 from Beardstown High School.

She married W. Richard "Dick" Birkey in Beardstown on Jan. 28, 1951.

Connie retired Aug. 1, 1987, from the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts.

She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where she served on the Altar Guild and was active in the Seeker's Bible Study for many years.

She was also a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.

After moving to Canton, Connie, along with her husband Dick, attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Canton.

Connie was devoted to her family. She looked forward to gatherings and spending time with them.

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Dick Birkey; her son, Richard "Rick" (wife Jeannie) Birkey of Canton; her grandson, Shae (wife Katie) Birkey; and her great-grandson, Brooks Birkey, all of Washington, Ill.; her sister, Aurelia Fisher of Peoria, Ill.; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two daughters, Nancy in 1963 and Gloria in 2003.

Visitation will be on Sunday, June 8, 2014, at Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Road, Springfield, Ill., from 2 to 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2014, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 2645 Old Jacksonville Road, Springfield, Ill., with the Rev. Daniel Eggold officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
