PEORIA - Vernon R. Welander, 89, of Peoria passed away at 12:06 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2014, at Hawthorne Manor in Peoria.
He was born on Feb. 22, 1925, in Peoria, a son of Rudolph Oscar and Pearl (Davison) Welander. He married Jeanne Mosher on July 11, 1954, in Canton, Ill. She preceded him in death on April 26, 2006, in Laguna Hills, Calif..
He was also preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Quentin.
Surviving are one daughter, Loraine (Joe) Harris of Dunlap; two sons, James (Patti) Welander of Leroy, Ill., and Robert (Rayette) Welander of Las Vegas, Nev.; six grandchildren, Nicholas Carruthers of Washington, Ill., Will Carruthers of Dunlap and James Welander, Sarah Welander, Sam Welander and Sarina Welander, all of Leroy; and a niece, Judy Conger of Peoria.
Vernon attended Bradley University. He owned and operated Welander Brothers Shoe Store in Downtown Peoria with his brother, Quentin, for many years.
He retired to Laguna Hills, Calif., in 1987, where he was a member of and was very involved with Saddleback Church of Lake Forrest, Calif., Habitat for Humanity and Laguna Hills Men's Golf Club. While living in Peoria, he was involved with the Lion's Club and St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral Vestry.
He was an avid golfer and volunteered doing mission work in Mexico. He enjoyed woodworking, but his favorite thing was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Vernon was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral in Peoria, where a memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014. Visitation will be one hour prior to service. Cremation rites have been accorded. Inurnment will take place in St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral Columbarium.
