WASHINGTON - Harold R. Combs Sr., 91, of Washington died at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2014, at Maple Lawn Homes in Eureka.

He was born on May 1, 1923, in rural Knox County to Lowell O. and Lois Dykeman Combs. He married Marian Cathcart on March 17, 1946, in London Mills, Ill. She survives.

Also surviving are his four children, Vicki Ann Miller of Village Mills, Texas, Carl Richard (Dana) Combs of Gillette, Wyo., Harold Ray Jr. (Judy) Combs of Waynesboro, Va., and William Lowell (Joann) Combs of Washington; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lester Oliver (Vivian) Combs of Herman, Ill.; and two sisters, Belva Lois (Max) Tessier of Washington and Eva Ingle of London Mills.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Marian Diana Combs; four brothers; and one sister.

Harold proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Navy, where he was stationed in the Pacific Theater.

He retired in 1985 from the coal mining industry as superintendant of the Western Division of Arch Mineral Corporation in Hanna, Wyo. He began as a laborer in the coal mines in 1948.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for many years and also a member of the American Legion Post 0480 in Steelville, Ill.

He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying many aspects of nature, including fishing, boating, camping and duck hunting. He also enjoyed welding and loved pingpong.

There will be a funeral service for Harold at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. There will be a visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Shannon Combs-Aloo will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded after the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America.
