Robert Schlatter Obituary

PEORIA - Robert B.L. "Ben" Schlatter, 86, of Peoria passed away at 8:15 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Proctor in Peoria.

He was born Jan. 3, 1928, to Vera Gwendolin (Theis) and Bernard Dewey Schlatter in Peoria, Ill.

Robert married Elaine Inez Saltz at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria, Ill., on May 27, 1952. She preceded him in death on Aug. 9, 2008, in Peoria.

He is survived by three sons, James L. Schlatter of Polvadera, N.M., John R. (Theresa) Schlatter of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jeffrey A. (Donna J.) Schlatter of Peoria Heights, Ill.; two grandsons, John R. "JJ" (Cassie) Schlatter of Sparland, Ill., and Christopher D. (Starr) Schlatter of Peoria, Ill.; six great-grandchildren, Jacob A. Schlatter and Kenneth R. Schlatter, both of Phoenix, Ariz., Christopher D. II, Robert M., and Kaylea E. Schlatter, and Logan P. Schlatter, all of Peoria, Ill.; two half brothers, O. Edward (Pat) Schlatter of Salida, Colo., and Roger D. Schlatter of Osage Beach, Mo.; and one half sister, Vera Tyler of Adamsville, Tenn.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Lucille (Waldmeier) Schlatter; one brother, James Eugene Schlatter; and one half brother, Franklin D. Schlatter.

He graduated from Manual High School in January 1946.

Robert served in the U.S. Navy from May 28, 1946, until he was discharged on March 25, 1948, as Seaman First Class, USN, and was stationed at Cleveland, Ohio. He also was in the USNR-R from March 26, 1948, to March 25, 1953.

He was a sheet metal worker and retired from Standard Sheet Metal after almost 40 years on May 1, 1987.

He was an avid fisherman, going to Minnesota almost every year to enjoy the North land.

Ben enjoyed going to garage sales and buying items to fix up and resell at his own sale. He was very talented and could fix almost anything.

Ben loved children and taught Sunday School at Westminster Presbyterian Church for many years.

A memorial service will be at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Monday, June 23, 2014, at 11 a.m. Pastor Joe Meyer will officiate. Visitation will be an hour before the service.
