Bennie was born on Dec. 7, 1931, in Montgomery City, Mo., to Earl and Elizabeth (Saladin) Blackburn. He married Shirley Fisher in Montgomery City on Sept. 11, 1955, and had celebrated more than 58 years together. Shirley survives.

Bennie was a retired machinist for Caterpillar Inc. where he had worked for 30 years, prior to his retirement in 1985. In addition to Caterpillar, Bennie and Shirley planted and managed Partridge Point Orchard, north of Metamora, for 35 years.

He had served in the U.S. Army after high school and was a veteran of the Korean War.
