CHILLICOTHE - Ella May Philyaw, 88, of Chillicothe died on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at the Waters of Covington in Covington, Ind.

Ella May was born on July 1, 1926, in Cawker City, Kan., the daughter of Elmer and Lucinda (Inscho) Cook. She married Herschel F. Philyaw on Sept. 19, 1948, in Chillicothe. He preceded her in death on Sept. 10, 1983.

Surviving are her children, Leah (Richard) Livengood of Veedersburg, Ind., Dale (Rebecca) Philyaw of Wisconsin, Rebecca (Larry) Hart of Germantown Hills, John (Lisa) Philyaw of Chillicothe and David (Julie) Philyaw of Chillicothe. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and two brothers, Robert Cook of Manhattan, Kan., and Donald (Daisy) Cook of Okinawa, Japan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a granddaughter, a sister and five brothers.

Ella May was a bookkeeper for her husband's business, Hersch's TV, in Chillicothe for more than 35 years.

She was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Chillicothe, where she was a charter member and longtime pianist. She was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the church choir for many years. She was also an election judge in Chillicothe for many years.

She loved her family and friends very much, always faithfully sending and attending birthday parties, graduations and all other family events.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Chillicothe. Pastor Niall Philyaw will officiate. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the funeral time at the church. Burial will be held at the Chillicothe City Cemetery in Chillicothe.

Memorials may be made to the Calvary Baptist Academy in Chillicothe.
