Dorothy Brucker Obituary

PEORIA - Dorothy Ann Holmes Brucker died the evening of Friday, August 8, 2014, at Heartland Health Care Center in Peoria.

She was born to Maurice F. and Anna Bell Scheilien Holmes at their farm in Alta, Ill. Dorothy was the granddaughter of Zealy Moss Holmes, the farm manager and trustee of Bradley University for 50 years, and a grandniece of Lydia Moss Bradley.

Dorothy earned degrees in business and home economics from Bradley Polytechnic in 1937. She taught both subjects at Sibley High School. She married Marion H. Brucker in 1939. Since she was not allowed to teach there as a married woman, she joined her husband in farming in Anchor, Ill. They moved their farming operation near Wyoming, Ill. where they farmed for 40 years. In 1990, they retired in Peoria, Ill.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Maurice H. Brucker (Emiko Yang) of Peoria, and her daughter, Jeanette (Carl) Heinisch of DeKalb, Ill. She is also survived by her grandsons, Doug (Heidi) Heinisch of Syracuse, Ind., Phil Heinisch of Atlanta, Ga., and Dan (Kim) Heinisch of DeKalb, Ill. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren, Bret, Cal, Meg and Cameron Heinisch of Indiana, Morgan, Cole and Addie Heinisch of Illinois; nieces; and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Marion; sisters Bernice Bamberger of Michigan and Betty Knapp of Henry; and great-grandson Drew Heinisch of DeKalb.

Dorothy was active in many community educational groups, including the Stark County and Illinois Homemakers Extension, Farm Bureau Women's Committee, the Stark County Junior Fair and her church, where she helped plan and serve meals to hundreds of people. Later, she and Marion served as volunteer cancer counselors for Methodist Hospital.

Cremation has been accorded, and a private celebration of life is planned for the family in DeKalb, Ill., at a later date.

Donations may be sent to the Oncology Navigator, UnityPoint Health-Methodist/Proctor Foundation, 120 NE Glen Oak Ave., Suite 101, Peoria, IL 61603, or to the .
