Hortense Woods Obituary

PEORIA - Hortense Woods, 67, of Peoria, Ill., passed at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria, Ill.

Hortense was born on July 14, 1947, in Jackson, Tenn., to Willie B. and Thersey (Williamson) Ewell. She married Larry D. Woods on Nov. 24, 1973, in Jackson, Tenn.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; two sons, Dr. Darrick W. Woods of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sidney L. Woods of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Melvin (Geraldine) Ewell and Elvin Ewell, all of Jackson, Tenn.; and three grandchildren, Elliyah, Eriana and Darrick. Hortense also has two very special lifelong friends, Ruthie Hamer and Minnie Summers.

Hortense received her bachelor's degree in 1968 from Lane College in Jackson, Tenn. She received her Master of Arts degree from Bradley University in 1979. She was employed by Peoria Public School District 150 as a teacher for 35 years, retiring in 2003. She taught at Greeley, Longfellow and Lincoln Middle School. She loved teaching.

Hortense was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She was active in her church, where she served on various committees, including on the church council and trustee board and as church treasurer and finance chairperson. She was a member of Bethel's United Methodist Women.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at First United Methodist Church of Peoria, 116 NE Perry Ave. A visitation will be held two hours prior to services, beginning at 9 a.m. The Rev. Gary Wilson, pastor of Bethel UMC, will officiate. Hortense will be laid to rest in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 210 N. Richard Pryor Place, Peoria, IL 61605-2348.
