CHILLICOTHE - Clifford H. Speer, 72, of Chillicothe passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at his home after a valiant three-year battle against lymphoma.
He was born in Pekin on Sept. 1, 1941, to Clifford K. and Ruth (Rodgers) Speer. He married Patricia Hitchcock on June 17, 1966, in Macomb.
Clifford is survived by his wife, Patricia of Chillicothe; a daughter, Tracie (Jason) Hauser of South Bend, Ind.; a son, Michael (Bridget) Speer of Peoria; four grandchildren, Lia and Sullivan Hauser and Alyssa and Noah Speer; one niece, Sally Kennedy; and three nephews, Floyd Henderson, Kirk Henderson and Brent Speer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Donald and Robert; and a nephew, Robert Jr.
He worked at Caterpillar Inc. for 31 years, retiring in 1994.
He was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church in Chillicothe.
He was a member of several dog-training groups and was an honorary member of Peoria Obedience Training Club, having served many years on the board and was the driving force to build an additional training building on the club's grounds. He enjoyed training and showing dogs in American and German obedience. Over the years, he trained and showed several different breeds to their obedience titles.
He also enjoyed making furniture for his friends and family. He made many beautiful pieces over the years. One of his favorite things was volunteering at Sophia's Offering at Angel's Kitchen. He felt that God had given him a wonderful opportunity to serve those in need.
His favorite pastime was spending time with his family, especially his four grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at St. Edward Catholic Church, Chillicothe. Father Keith Walder will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service time at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery.
