PEORIA - Clifford Roger Fox, 95, of Peoria passed away at 6:35 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at Proctor Place.

Cliff was born on Oct. 28, 1918, in Peoria to Jay R. and Agnes (Pritchet) Fox. He married Margaret E. Clementz on Aug. 28, 1940, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Peoria. She preceded him in death on June 12, 2011.

He also was preceded in death by his brother, Archibald.

He is survived by two daughters, Denise (Dan) Counsil of Edwards and Lynda (Pat) Friede of Brimfield; four grandchildren, Jeff (Eva) Counsil of Peoria, Debbie Counsil of Racine, Wis., Jennifer (Gary) Shadid of Peoria and Robin (John) Schaffer of Metamora; and eight great-grandchildren, Nathan Counsil, Landon Counsil, Byron Counsil, Andrew Schaffer, Elizabeth Schaffer, Sarah Schaffer, Gabriel Shadid and Michael Shadid.

Cliff graduated in 1937 from Stronghurst High School in Stronghurst, Ill.

He was a World War II Navy veteran. After joining the Navy Seabees in 1943, he was deployed to the South Pacific, where his specialty was water distribution and treatment for the troops. Cliff rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After the war, Cliff and Margaret started their family and he began his 46-year career as an operating engineer in the steam and electric power generation facility at the Bemis Bag factory in Peoria.

As their family grew, family time was spent boating on the Illinois River and Lake Hamilton, near Hot Springs, Ark. He totally enjoyed taking on home improvement projects and working tirelessly in planning before doing. He always kept a picture perfect yard and had a "farmer's gift" for growing garden produce. Although he had many interests, his biggest joys came during the family gatherings that may have involved a backyard cookout or a seasonal holiday feast. Over the course of his life, he enjoyed meeting people and he didn't shy away from stepping up to do what he believed needed to be done. His involvement included taking on the presidency of the Proctor Place Resident Advisory Council for four years. After retirement, Cliff and Marg enjoyed ballroom dancing at the Hub and travelling the United States and Canada by car. They were inseparable for more than 70 years. Like so many of their generation, they started with few material possessions, worked hard to earn what they needed and taught the next generation that family harmony is priceless.

The families of Denise and Lynda would like to offer a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Tom Kouri, and the healthcare staff at Proctor Place for applying their talents and kindness during some difficult times. Also, thanks to the many fine people at Proctor Place that formed valued friendships.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, at Holy Family Catholic Church. Franciscan Friars will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, with recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum.
