Pekin woman dies at 100
PEKIN - Gladys Rose Wolfer, age 100, of Pekin passed away at 11:20 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, at Bickford House in Peoria.
Born May 31, 1914, in Pekin to Jesse J. and Linda E. (Arends) Lyons, she married J. Edgar Wolfer Jr. on Feb. 7, 1940, in Pekin. He died Feb. 2, 1974, in Montreal, Canada.
She also was preceded in death by one brother, Howard F. Lyons.
Gladys worked as a secretary for the Tazewell Service Company at the Tazewell County Farm Bureau and then for Pekin Insurance, last working in 1944.
Gladys was very community minded. She was a life member of the Pekin YWCA and a charter member of the Tri-S Club at the YWCA. She also was a member of the Pekin Women's Club, Tazewell County Genealogical Society and Friends of the Library. She was a former member of the Dirksen Center Guild and Pekin Hospital League.
Gladys was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin.
Her memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin. The Rev. Gary L. Ford will officiate. There will be no visitation. Private inurnment will be in Lakeside Mausoleum in Pekin.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
