PEKIN - Ruby Anderson, 86, of Pekin passed away and went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ at 4:09 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

She was born Sept. 23, 1927, in Millerstown, Ky., to Samuel Aaron and Mary Bryan (Awbrey) Hawkins. She married the love of her life, James Francis "Jim" Anderson, on June 27, 1953, in Peoria. They shared 61 years of marriage.

Also surviving are one son, James Anderson Jr. of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two daughters, Judy Johnson of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Linda (Michael) Thomas of Peoria; seven grandchildren, Suzie (Josh) Osterman, Courtney Anderson, Kristy (Drew) Pieschke, Lauren Johnson, Brooke Anderson, Cindy Thomas and Kyle Johnson; and one great-grandson, Jacob Osterman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, James Hawkins; and one sister, Elizabeth Thomas.

She received her B.A. in Elementary Education from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky., and later earned her M.A. in Educational Administration from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. She also was named to "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities."

Ruby had a love for children and was a schoolteacher for 25 years. She began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse and later at several rural schools in Leitchfield, Ky. She then moved to Illinois and taught kindergarten at Columbia School in Peoria and second grade at Georgetowne School in North Pekin.

While raising her children, Ruby was a substitute teacher for Pekin Public Schools District 108 for 10 years. She later returned to teaching as a kindergarten teacher at Spring Lake School in rural Manito for seven years, retiring in 1986.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Pekin, where she was a member of the Missionary Society, taught Vacation Bible School, was an inspirational speaker at church services and led Bible studies at Hallmark House Nursing Center in Pekin. Ruby loved reading the Bible and enjoyed sharing it with others.

She was a member of the Tazewell County Retired Teachers Association and Pekin Woman's Club. She had been a member of the Pekin Sweet Adeline's and Miller Melodies. She was a member of the East Peoria Caterpillar Retirees Club and had been the secretary of the retirees club in Largo, Fla., for seven years. She also was a former president of the Triangle Club at Fairway Village in Largo.

She was a registered clown and was known as "Grandma Buckles." Ruby was blessed with many friends and had a sharp sense of humor.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church in Pekin. Pastor Michael McLeod will officiate. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin and also one hour before the funeral at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
