PEORIA - Robert A. Sylkaitis, 68, of Peoria passed away at 3:20 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at his residence.
He was born on April 29, 1942, in Aurora, Ill. He married Dolores M. Dickerson on Nov. 23, 1968, in Peoria. She survives.
Bob is also survived by one daughter, Nichola (Lucas) Peterson of Peoria; one son, Scott (Tracey) Sylkaitis of Peoria; four grandchildren, Danielle, Austin, James and Makayla; two sisters, Susan (Jim) Myers of Aurora, Ill., and Sandra (Barry) Cowart of St. Charles, Ill.; and one brother, Tim Thick of Schaumburg, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Christine Petit McElroy.
He was a surgical registered nurse at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center for 40 years, retiring in 2006.
Bob was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam.
He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights.
But of all of his accomplishments, he took his greatest pride in being called "Grandpa Bob." He was unselfish of his time with his four grandkids who adored him.
Bob was an avid White Sox fan.
A funeral Mass will be at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at St. Thomas Church, with the Rev. Thomas Taylor officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, with recitation of the rosary at 6:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before the Mass at the church. Cremation rites will be accorded after the Mass. Private burial of ashes will be in Resurrection Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded.
