PEORIA - Donald Robert Buerschinger, age 88, formerly of Peoria, passed away with his daughter at his side on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, in Boca Grande, Fla.
Don was born on April 12, 1923, in Green Bay, Wis., to Frank Buerschinger and Irene Platten.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Pat; and also his loving wife of 52 years, Dixie. Now, he and Dixie sail the heavens together.
Don was proud to be an Eagle Scout.
He graduated from the University of Wisconsin engineering school in just three years, then entered Midshipman's School at the University of Notre Dame. After graduating, he served as a communications officer in the U.S. Navy until the end of World War ll.
After the war, he was stationed in Philadelphia, where he met the love of his life, Dixie, at the Philadelphia Ski Club. They married in 1952 and, shortly thereafter, moved to Peoria, Ill.
Don was employed as the chief staff electrical engineer at WABCO for 27 years. Always an avid sailor, he continued his love of sailing at the IVY Club in Peoria, where he raced his boats and was a staple at the Fox Hole. When he retired to Egg Harbor, Wis., he and Dixie sailed their Hunter 34 all over the Great Lakes. When he was not sailing, he was talking sailing with the great many friends he and Dixie made in Door County.
Don is survived by his daughter, Teresa Nolan, and her partner, Annette Bellucci of Englewood, Fla.; son-in-law, Mitch Nolan of Green Bay, Wis.; his grandsons, Frank Nolan (Sarah) of New Berlin, Wis., and Sam Nolan of Green Bay, Wis.; and his great-granddaughters, Natalie and Sawyer.
Special thanks to those who helped care for Don in his later years: Sandy, Jeanne, and Connie.
Don would wish you calm seas and gentle breezes and we wish him the same in heaven.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Door County Land Trust in Don's honor would be welcomed.
Memorial services will be July 8 at St. Patrick's Church in Green Bay.
