Harry Bates Obituary

PEORIA - Harry E. "Bompoo" Bates, 64, of Peoria passed away at 10:16 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at Methodist Medical Center after a courageous six-week battle with cancer.

He was born on Dec. 17, 1946, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Bruce M. and Mildred (Beghtol) Bates. He married Helen Kay Bowling on Nov. 26, 1965, in rural Bloomfield, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Cecil Bowling; infant brother, David; his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Lundy Weeks; and his brother-in-law, Bud Ware.

Surviving are his wife, Kay of Peoria; and four children, Robert Bates, Lori Plumer, Stephanie Bates, all of Peoria, and Ben Bates of East Peoria. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Matthew Plumer, Bryn, Jagger, Bailey and Jersey Bates; one brother, Richard (Peg) Bates of Drakesville, Iowa; two sisters, Mary Jo (Larry) Balmer of Bloomfield, Iowa, and Cheryle Ann (Kevin) Miller of Warsaw; his mother-in-law, Ruth Bowling of Bloomfield, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Elaine (Gerald) Hill of Kirksville, Mo., and Earlene Ware of Johnston, Iowa; one brother-in-law, Stephen (Karen) Bowling of Bloomfield, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Harry owned and operated H.B. Air Conditioning, Refrigeration & Heating and worked in the HVAC Maintenance Department with Illinois Central College, and was a member of the local HVAC Union.

Harry enjoyed hunting, gardening, fishing with his children and grandchildren and taking care of his Cadillac. He also enjoyed to travel and looked forward to his annual vacation to South Padre Island, Texas.

A service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, with visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. at Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria. The Rev. Paul Trilikis will officiate. Cremation will be accorded after the service.
