Thomas Johnson Obituary

WASHINGTON - Thomas Leon Johnson, 82, of Washington, Ill., died at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at his home.

Born on Dec. 17, 1930, in Colfax, Ill., to Elmo and Lillian Leonard Johnson, he married Barbara Kay DeWitt on April 19, 1952, at St. John's Catholic Church in Peoria. She survives.

Also surviving are three children, Kathryn (Bill) Wurster of Morton, Nancy (Randy) Iverson of Washington and Mark (Lori) Johnson of Eureka; and four sisters, Lucille Morgan of Monticello, Ill., Mae Gardner of Gibson City, Ill., Ellen A. Nance of Washington, Ill., and Shirley (Jim) McGimpsey of Springdale, Ark. He will be remembered as "Gramps" to his six grandchildren, Tricia Rivara, Chad Wurster, Ryan Wurster, Dawn (Donnie) McKinney, Tim Iverson and Molly Kay Johnson; and six great-grandchildren, Zachary, Aiden, Kaylee, Alyssa, Brayden Leon and Mallory.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Ervin Johnson and his parents.

Tom was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a mechanic during the Korean conflict.

Tom started his own business, Tom's Radiator Repair, and later Tom's Lawn and Garden Center in Sunnyland, where he was a John Deere dealer for 32 years, retiring in 1999.

He was a former member of the Sunnyland Lions Club for many years, serving as their president. He also was a founding member of the Mid-State Snow Bird's Snowmobile Club of Central Illinois, was a member of the American Legion Post No. 100 in Washington and served on the City of Washington Zoning Board for many years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Metamora.

He enjoyed wintering in Sarasota, Fla., was considered a "Jack-of-all-Trades," loved fishing and will be remembered as a great storyteller.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at Deiters Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington. Father Don Roszkowski will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery in Washington, with military rites accorded by the U.S. Army and the Tazewell Military Rites Team.

Memorials may be made to Methodist Hospice or Illinois Cancer Care.
