James Stapleton Obituary

PEKIN - James Roba Stapleton Jr., 79, of Muscatine, Iowa, formerly of Pekin, Ill., died on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Carrington Place in Muscatine, Iowa.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at First Christian Church, 700 Kindler Ave. The Rev. Alex S. Kindred will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Muscatine Humane Society.

James was born on May 27, 1933, in Joliet, Ill., the son of James R. and Zora Tusek Stapleton. He married Marilyn Joanne Keil on Feb. 16, 1953. She preceded him in death on May 15, 1979. He married Alma Brogly on March 25, 2000.

James graduated from East Peoria High School, class of 1951.

He was proud to have served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953 until 1973, achieving the rank of master sergeant.

Jim was a former commander at the Pekin, Ill., American Legion; an officer in the Civil Defense Rescue Squad, when it existed; a member of Marine Corps League and the Moose in Pekin; and volunteered at the Salvation Army, the Art Guild and his church.

He loved motorcycle riding.

James also worked part time as a bank guard at Herget National Bank for many years and worked as a Pekin Park District police officer. Following his retirement from the U.S. Postal Service, James worked in security at Central Illinois Regional Airport.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Stapleton; his children, Jana (Keith) Bonnett, Tim (Chris) Stapleton and Kathy (Bobby) Sansale; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his sister, Jacky Jones. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Bear.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Clyde Stapleton; and one sister, Pauline Linich.
