BUSHNELL - Hazel Marie Filbert, age 93, of Bushnell passed away at 7:28 p.m. on Friday, April 26, 2013, at the Knox County Nursing Home in Knoxville, Ill.
Hazel was born on April 30, 1919, near Astoria, Ill., to Russell and Susan Barrett Daniel. She married Kenneth K. Perkins in 1939; they divorced in 1947. She later married Merideth G. Filbert on May 10, 1957, and he preceded her in death, on Nov. 23, 2010.
Hazel is survived by two daughters, Peggy Clayton of Peoria, Ill., and Rita Maddex of Brimfield, Ill.; one son, Mark Filbert of Denver, Colo., two grandchildren, Susan (Greg) Allen of Quincy, Ill., and Rick Clayton of Algonquin, Ill., and one brother, Harry Daniel of Peoria, Ill. She is also survived by C. Jane Widger, whom she referred to as her "adopted daughter."
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Wilbur Daniel and an infant brother, Christopher Daniel; and two sons-in-law, Jim Clayton and Tom Maddex.
Hazel was an active member of First Baptist Church in Bushnell, where she taught the Upstreamers Class for over 50 years, several as Sunday School superintendent for 15 years and was a member of the board of trustees for 15 years. In 1992 she was named Christian Education Worker of the Year by the Central Illinois Sunday School Convention.
In addition, she was chairperson of the Bushnell Town and Country Festival Annual Arts and Crafts Exhibition for a number of years and a longtime member of the Bushnell Grandmother's Club, for which she held several offices.
Among her hobbies were reading, sewing, gardening, canning fruits and vegetables and travel. She especially enjoyed trips to Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Lichtenstein, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on what would have been her 94th birthday, Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Bushnell, Ill. Pastor Dave Eden will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 29, 2013, at the Martin-Hollis Funeral Home, where friends may call after 2 p.m. on Monday. Burial will be in the Bushnell Cemetery.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the First Baptist Church in Bushnell, Ill.
