TREMONT - Helen Kenney, 96, of Tremont passed away at 7:35 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2013, at Amy's Country Manor in Pekin.
She was born Dec. 25, 1916, in rural Pekin to Philip P. and Lela Mae Morgan Straub. She married Joseph C. Kenney on Sept. 10, 1941, in South Pekin, and he passed away Feb. 1, 2007.
Surviving are one son, Leon C. (Robin) Kenney of Tremont; one daughter, Phyllis (Vern) Whisenand of Tremont; two grandchildren, Craig Whisenand and Krista (Steve) Muselman; four great-grandchildren, Hunter and Carter Whisenand and Joseph and Justin Muselman; three stepgrandchildren, Brandon, Wesley, and Sara Lewis; and one sister, Mildred Straub of Tremont.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Marion Birkmeier.
Helen worked as a maid and house cleaner for Franklin Velde in Pekin, as a midwife nurse on confinement cases delivering babies, at Pekin Hospital in housekeeping, at Caterpillar Inc. in East Peoria washing engine parts and worked at Northwestern Railroad round house cleaning locomotives and pits. She also worked as a waitress while stationed in Baltimore with her husband during the service and worked at Interlocking Fence Factory in Morton during World War II.
She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 1236 in Tremont for over 40 years and cooked meals for Tremont Lions Club for 11 years.
She enjoyed gardening and flowers.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at Davis Mortuary in Tremont. Pastor Josh Beutow will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
