EAST PEORIA - Lem G. Stoecker Jr., 88, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of East Peoria, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio.
He worked briefly at Caterpillar Inc. then left to join the family business, the Stoecker Seed Company in Peoria, for 30 years. He later owned and operated the Stoecker Garden Center in East Peoria.
Lem was a life member of the VFW and American Legion Post, and served as auxiliary police officer in Morton.
Lem was a W.W. II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 1st Class.
Lem is survived by his first wife, Edith Sauers; daughter, Diana (Ron) Stokes of Columbus, Ohio; grandsons, Michael (Sonia) Rigel of Glendale, Ariz., Anthony Rigel of Delaware, Ohio, and Darren (Tammy) Rigel of Hilliard, Ohio; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sister, Adeline Stetzler of Morton, Ill.; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Stoecker; parents, Lem and Elizabeth (Stegmaier) Stoecker; brother, Delbert; and sister, Mary Marfell.
Lem married Joyce Stoecker on July 13, 1974, and she preceded him in death.
He is also survived by his stepchildren, Dennis (Phyllis) Peplow of Bartlett, Frank (Toby) Peplow, Mark Peplow, Cheryl (Dan) Sutter and Lynn Lyamon.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Lem will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2013, in the Springdale Cemetery Chapel, Peoria, Ill.
