PEORIA - Jane Wellington Strehlow, 82, formerly of Peoria, died at home in Evanston on Wednesday, July 3, 2013. The cause was complications of cancer.
Jane was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Quincy W. and Katherine Kreinheder Wellington.
She earned a sociology degree from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., where she was elected president of Phi Beta Phi sorority.
She married her high school sweetheart, Paul V. Strehlow Jr., in 1953. They spent several years in California while he served in the U.S. Navy, and then returned to Peoria, where she spent the next 30 years in public service and civic leadership.
Jane was elected president of the Junior League of Peoria and board president of the Heart of Illinois United Way. After earning a master of social work degree from the University of Illinois, she joined the staff of the United Way, where among her achievements were managing a comprehensive community needs assessment and serving as interim executive director.
Jane and her husband moved to the Chicago area in 1986. She worked in fundraising and ultimately retired from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary as director of development.
She was an active member of St. Luke's Church in Evanston, serving on the vestry and the rector search committee and supporting numerous outreach and formation efforts. In retirement, she participated fully in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Northwestern.
Jane is survived by her husband of 60 years, Paul V. Strehlow Jr.; her sister, Mary Wellington McKinley of Palm Desert, Calif.; her children, Becky, Val and Fritz, and their spouses and partners; and her grandsons, William, Parker, Ricky and Paul.
She was predeceased by her other grandson, Allen.
Services will be held on Saturday, July 20, at 1 p.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 939 Hinman Ave., Evanston, IL 60201. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke's Church.
