PEORIA - Girtha B. Montgomery, age 79, of Peoria passed away on Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at the Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.
Girtha was born on April 25, 1934, in Homan, Ark., to Arthur and Geneva (Cornelius) Tyes. She married Calvin Montgomery on Aug. 2, 1980, in Peoria.
Girtha is survived by her husband, Calvin; her children, Juanita Burton of Peoria, Ill., Nathaniel Burton of Tampa, Fla., Girtha (Melvin) Harris of Hiram, Ga., Daniel (Tanya) Burton of Peoria, Ill., Rosalyn (Charlie) Hill of Peoria, Ill., Matthew Burton of San Jose, Calif., Melinda (Don) Stewart of Waco, Texas, Timothy Burton of Peoria, Ill., Tommy (Kumiko) Graham of Okinawa, Japan, Kelissa (Ismael) Ponce of Aurora, Ill., Charles Montgomery of Peoria, Ill., and Michael Montgomery of Peoria, Ill.; three sisters, Doris Torres and Mary Moland of Bakersfield, Calif., and Willie Mae Foster of Houston, Texas; and three brothers, Samuel Henry and Lawrence Henry of Sacramento, Calif., and Adolph Tyes Jr. of Bakersfield, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Mark Burton; four sisters; and one brother.
Girtha retired from Caterpillar Inc.
She and Calvin were foster parents for 15 years.
She was a member of Star of Hope Full Gospel Church in Peoria, where she worked with the children's choir and taught Sunday School.
She enjoyed fishing, sewing, card games, gardening and cooking.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at Star of Hope Full Gospel Church in Peoria, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Joseph H. Johnson will be officiating. Burial will be at Parkview Cemetery in Peoria.
