EUREKA - James M. "Jim" Chilton, 91, of Eureka, formerly of Deer Creek, passed away at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, in rural Deer Creek.
He was born June 6, 1922, in Brandywine, Md., to James Murrell and Eloise L. (Jordan) Chilton.
Jim and his wife Arlene's love story began when they met in Washington, D.C., in April of 1946. Arlene came to Washington from South Dakota to work for the government. Jim was raised in that area and was serving in the United States Coast Guard at the end of World War II. They became engaged in May 1946 and were married on June 10, 1946, in Washington, D.C. They had just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary prior to Arlene's death on July 7, 2012.
Jim also was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Hoover of Havre de Grace, Md.
He is survived by three children, Mark (Julie) Chilton of Deer Creek, and Bruce Chilton and Joann Campbell, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandsons, Brett (Joy) Chilton, Michael Chilton, Kyle (LaRae) Chilton and Dru Chilton; one granddaughter, Amanda (Casey) Heinold; his great-grandchildren; two sisters, Audrey Kerge of Crofton, Md., and Mildred Talbot of St. Michaels, Md.; and two brothers, Raymond Chilton of Waldorf, Md., and Arthur Chilton of Los Angeles, Calif.
Jim was employed as an electrician at Caterpillar Inc., retiring in 1982.
He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Morton.
Cremation will be accorded. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton. A private family graveside service will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, at Mount Zion Cemetery in Deer Creek with Pastor Jeff Anderson officiating.
