PEORIA - Ditto "Junior" Howard Jr., 80, of Peoria, Ill., passed away at 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at his residence.
Ditto was born Sept. 10, 1932, in Greenwood, Miss., to Ella (McAfee) and Ditto Howard Sr. He married Dorothy Hamilton in Birmingham, Ala., on July 7, 1963. She survives.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Dorothy Howard of Columbus, Ga.; one daughter, Patrice Howard of Columbus, Ga.; two brothers, Henry Howard of Oakland, Calif., and Elder Felton (Donna) Beck Jr. of Peoria; five sisters, Maella Bell of St. Louis, Mo., Maxine Beck of Indianapolis, Ind., and Joanna Williams, Diana Chestnut and Janice McDonald, all of Peoria; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ditto Howard Sr. and Elder Felton and Ella Beck Sr.; one brother, John Howard; and one sister, Helen Beck.
Ditto was a Korean War and Vietnam veteran who was awarded the Bronze Star Medal on Sept. 30, 1970. He served as a practical nurse and medical adviser. He retired as a sergeant first class from the U.S. Army on June 6, 1973.
Ditto was a faithful member of Faith Tabernacle COGIC, where he taught Sunday school and was part of the van ministry.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at Faith Tabernacle COGIC, with a visitation one hour prior beginning at 10 a.m. Elder Felton Beck Jr. will officiate. Ditto will be laid to rest at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, Ill., where military honors will be accorded.
