CANTON - Howard David McGinnis, 88, of Canton, Ill., passed away at 5:25 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 8, 1925, in Metropolis, Ill., to Clarence and Orphia (Howard) McGinnis. He married Thelma James on Dec. 29, 1950, in Elmwood. She survives.
Also surviving are five children, Carolyn McGinnis of Malvern, Ark., Connie (Dennis) Ripley of Canton, Charlotte (Ronald) Henn of Morris, Sandra (Lendel) Walters of Canton and Peter Gryp of Victorville, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding Howard in death were his parents; one son, James Allen McGinnis; one grandson, Howard David Henn; five brothers; and one sister.
He worked for Caterpillar for 33 years, retiring in 1975.
He was of the Baptist faith. Howard was a Copperas Creek volunteer fireman for 35 years.
He loved hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. He was a great story teller.
Services will be Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Murphy-Sedgwick Memorial Home in Canton, with visitation one hour prior. The Rev. Rick Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in Walnut Cemetery in Banner, Ill.
The family is very grateful for Harbor Lights Hospice and requests memorials be made to them in Howard's name.
