Glenn Steelman Obituary

BUSHNELL - Glenn Boston Steelman, age 94, recently of Courtyard Estates in Bushnell, Ill., passed away on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013.

He was born on Oct. 6, 1919, in Greene County, Ill., to George and Dolly Steelman. He married Ella Dee (Hurst) Steelman, of Macomb, Ill., on Nov. 12, 1949. She preceded him in death on Oct. 16, 2008.

He is survived by one daughter, Kathy (Charles) Brown of Bartonville, Ill.; four sons, Michael (Laura) Steelman of Bushnell, Ill., David (Christine) Steelman of Playa Del Carman, Mexico, Kevin Steelman of Springfield, Ill., and Todd (Therese) Steelman of Lubbock, Texas; along with nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Glenn graduated from Roodhouse High School in Greene County, Ill., entered the United States Navy in 1939, and served until 1947. He attained the rank of boatswains mate first class, serving in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He served on the USS Lawrence, participated in the Battle of Okinawa and served on several other ships during his Navy service. Glenn recently took the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., with many of his fellow World War II veterans.

He worked for Central Illinois Public Service Co. for over 35 years, as lineman and then manager, before retiring.

Glenn was a member of the T.J. Pickett Masonic Lodge of Bushnell, Ill., and the Quincy, Ill., Consistory. He also was a member of the Pierce-McDonald VFW Post 1422 of Bushnell. Glenn served as a Cub Scoutmaster in Bushnell for many years and was also a Little League baseball coach. Glenn served on the Bushnell City Council for a number of years.

Glenn loved his family and was adored by all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved people and visiting with all his friends.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at the Bushnell Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Martin-Hollis Funeral Home in Bushnell, Ill., from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, where friends may call after 2 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bushnell Rescue Squad or the Bushnell VFW Post 1422.
