Sigma Kappa member dies at 103

Peoria - Imogene "Gene" Belsley, 103, of Peoria passed away peacefully with her family at her side at 9:03 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at Proctor Place in Peoria.

Gene was born on December 31, 1909, in Detroit to Frank and Jesse (Pardee) Goodman. Her parents preceded her in death. On July 3, 1933, she married Joseph Belsley, M.D., at her parents' apartment in Detroit. He preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 1994.

She is survived by her three daughters, Margie (Jack) Lee of Sanibel, Fla., Jan (Ed) Tuerk of Peoria and Kathy (Brian Nemenoff) Belsley of Peoria. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Debbie (Reid) Woods of Wheaton, Ill., Mitzi (Doug) Ecklund of Des Moines, Iowa, Barb (Jay) Dawson of Peoria, Ted (Jen) Tuerk of LaGrange, Ill., Kathryn Eissfeldt of Peoria and Brian (Courtney) Belsley of Peoria.

She was blessed to welcome into the family 11 great-grandchildren who also survive, Jack and Elly Woods, Natalie and Will Ecklund, AnaBel and Alester Dawson, Elle, Genie, Eddie, and Margot Tuerk, and Clark Belsley.

Gene graduated from Detroit Teachers College, which later became the College of Education at Wayne State University.

She joined Pi Kappa Sigma, a professional educational sorority, which later affiliated with Sigma Kappa. After graduation, she taught grade school in Detroit.

She was the last surviving charter member of the Peoria Medical Society Alliance. She was also a founding member of Chapter IB of PEO, and later a member of Chapter FB. She was an active member of the Methodist Hospital Service League. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Peoria, the Country Club of Peoria, As You Like It Club, and Sigma Kappa.

Gene's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Tom Kouri whose wisdom, knowledge, judgment and compassion contributed to her long and fulfilling life. The family also appreciates the staff at Proctor Place, where she made her home for the past 17 years, and especially the nursing staff who took care of her with such love and dedication for the final 10 months of her life.

A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Peoria. Dr. Jim Carlson will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, also at the church.

Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
