PEKIN - Joseph William "Joe" Evans, 73, of Pekin passed away at 4:29 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at UnityPoint Health-Methodist in Peoria.
Born Jan. 3, 1941, in Pekin to Joseph and Jessie (Clark) Evans, he married Neva Mae Cross on April 1, 1967, in Pekin. She died March 4, 2008, in Pekin.
He also was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Bud Evans.
Surviving are one stepson, Wayne (Janet) Stevens of Pekin; one stepdaughter, Kathy Shepherd of Lincoln; six stepgrandchildren; 17 stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, Jack (Jane) Evans of Pekin; and two sisters, Nora Haynes and Jean (Ron) Peoples, both of Pekin.
He had served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
Joe worked at Caterpillar Inc. for 32 years, retiring in 1996 as a heat treat specialist at Building KK in East Peoria. Following his retirement, he worked in security at the former Pekin Mall. Before serving in the Army, Joe had worked for Bird Farm Sausage.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1869 in Pekin.
Joe had several booths at consignment shops in Pekin and Delavan. He enjoyed going to auctions and garage sales and camping.
In earlier years, Joe played softball with his brother. Joe was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan and also was a fan of the Chicago Bears, NASCAR, Bradley basketball and University of Illinois sports.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. The Rev. Judy Doyle will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin, where military rites will be accorded by the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team.
